Once you get your coconut shell cups, you can use the sand paper to remove the "hair" as I like to call it. Its less of a fire hazard and wont fall off and make a mess around your house. Also, Make certain that you carve a flat spot on the bottom of the coconut shell so that it sits in piece and doesn't roll or tip over.

Next, wash the coconut with warm water and let dry. When dry, take a chunk of your wax and rub the outside of the shell with your fingers. This will give the shell a nice dark brown color and also moisten the shell to prevent a fire hazard. since the coconut shells are porous, be sure to rub the wax in evenly.

Now you can use either Elmer's glue or Mod Podge to glue the candle wicks to the bottom inside of the shell. Its ok if the wick isn't perfectly placed in the middle and/or if the coconut shell sits a little tilted on the table. we're going for a tropical/natural look and nothing is ever systematical in nature lOl. To cut time, start heating a pot filled half way with water.

Now we can place the cubes of wax into the aluminum soup can. When the cubes start to melt, begin to stir with a butter knife. If you desire to make a scented candle, read the directions on the packaging for the proper portions. Add the proper portions to the mixture. Stir until all cubes are completely liquefied. I would prefer finding something to stabilizer the shell for when you pour. You can use small Styrofoam cups or plastic butter containers.

Once the wax is completely liquefied and ready to pour, retrieve kitchen mittens and remove the aluminum can from the water carefully. Use one hand to insure the candle wick stays straight while pouring and the other for the pouring. Carefully and slowly pour the contains of the aluminum soup can into the shell and fill to 1 cm from the top.

After pouring the wax into the coconut shell, allow the wax to sit and completely solidify (harden) for a few hours. When the candle has completely solidified, you can then cut the wick of the candle. I like my wick to be about 2 cm. Don't cut the wick too short or it wont burn right and will ruin the whole candle. A safe length is at least 1 cm. Once cut, rub some candle wax that was left over, on the wick. Once that's done, your candle is complete :D

These coconut shell candles are fun, easy, and inexpensive. They are a great gift for any holiday and any individual. The sight and scent of these candles when burning, give off not only a soothing aroma, but also set a calm and relaxing atmosphere. You can even use these candles as decorative items by dressing them up as island-tini drinks.
